New European Record on 241 GHz Band – Neuer Rekord im 241 GHz Band

Gert DG8EB and Michael DB6NT improved the Europe / IARU R1 track record in the 241 GHz band from 20 to 38.523 km on 02/14/2021 at 1:20 p.m.

In super sunny winter weather, they decided at short notice to try a connection from Schöneck JO60DJ95HK (707m ASL) to Berg JO50VI49IK (645m ASL). First they made a connection to 76 GHz to roughly align the antennas. Then they optimized the antennas with the 122 GHz signals. They heard themselves on 241 GHz immediately and were able to optimize the antennas again.

The QSO took place at 13:20 UTC. 559 reports were exchanged on both sides.

Both receivers worked with a subharmonic mixer with 120 GHz LO frequency. The transmission power was 20 mW. Gert used a 60 cm parabolic mirror, Michael used a 40 cm dish. They postponed an attempt over 50 km to DK0NA to a later date, as the location is currently difficult to reach due to the snow situation. The weather conditions and route damping were not bad, but could be much better.
